ZIO GABEKO INFORMAZIOA

Bere haurtzaroko lagun baten eskela, Kontxirena, ikusi zuen eta horrek bere barruan haurtzaroko gogorapenak eta bizitzaren azalpenik gabeko gertakari batzuk ernarazi zituen.  Aurrera zihoan bere gogoetan murgilduta. ’Fisikarientzat informazioa materia da. Baina orduan, zer izango dira nire haurtzaroko gogoetak? Zelako materiaz konposatuak egongo dira? Bulkada elektrikoaz agian? Baina,… bakarrik?

Neurologoek jakingo balute, gutxienez! -esaten zuen berekiko. ‘Azkenean  ,uhin edo partikula, tontolapiko hutsa izango naiz matematikariek hiru koordenada espazialetan zatikatutako espazioan eta laugarren tenporalaren  zehar mugitzen dela, ez  beste gauzarik’-gehitu zuen marmarka haserre samar .

Bere buruan Toribio Aguirre kalea gorpuzten ari zen , korridore luze bat balitz bezala. Hasieran Patxiren zapategian, bere  mailuaren kla-kla soinua entzuten zelarik. Gero  Emiliren elikagai-dendara, bere senarra Jose Garmendia zaldibiarra, orgatxotik tiraka  berak herri osoko labean egindako ogiak eta opiltxoarekin zetorrelarik.

Hurrengoa, Izkina taberna. Han egongo zen Sodupe goiza lasaian asperturik besoak gurutzatuak zituztelarik eta arratsalde jendetsuan lanez lepo bete. Gero Txantxote arrandegi builosoa, garrasi eta ur txorrotaz bete zelarik. Aurrean  Arbolapetako gerizpea, kaletarren elkargunea, goizean jende barik. Hurrengoa Juldain estankoa. Han ziren tabakoaz gain Novaro editorialeko ‘Vidas ejemplares’, ‘La Codorniz’ eta ‘el Caso’ aldizkariak bere erakusleihoan.

Aurrexeago Petra ‘kolunas’ fruta-denda eta  Gomix etxetresnaren denda, tramankulu bitxiaz mukuru zelarik bere ferra itxurako espazioan. Eskuinean  bere lehengusua Pedro Zubiaren ‘Perikin’ ile-apaindegia, isekari asko zeuden bezeroen artean! Kaleko beste aldean  ‘el Caserio’ taberna. Kale bukaeran  harresiz inguraturiko Montzon etxea, bere udareondo fruituz kargaturik.

Kaletik ateratzean San Frantzisko eliza eta haren klaustroak(kalistroak) aurkitzen ziren, merkatuaren ondoan. Hango merkatua asteburuan ‘Berduli dancing’ izendatua, gazteentzako dantzalekua bihurtzen zen. Klaustroan zuten Mesedeetako mojek beren haur eskola. Eskolaren atea itxita aurkituko zela itxaropen sekretuaz ,astiro joaten izan zen. Batzuetan bere asmoa bete zuen.

Moja bat jubilatzera zihoan eta berari tokatu zitzaion bere lehen urteko eskolan moja horri beren omenezko diskurtsoa irakurtzea. Hitzaldia entseatzeko beste moja bat neskaren gela bat eraman zion eta diskurtsoaren papera emanez agindu zion: ‘irakurri’. Gero hasi zen esaten: ‘altuxeago’. Aspertu samar hartu zion gerritik eta idazmahai baten gainean jarriz esan zion: ‘Orain bai, altuxeago. Ekin irakurtzen’. Gelako neska guztiek, bera baino hiru urte zaharragoak, barrez lehertu ziren. Berak ez zuen gogoratu diskurtso horren hitzik, baina bai zelako lotsa pasatu zuen entsegu hartan.

Beste egun batean moja bat eseri zen bere ondoan. Infernura gaixtoak joaten ziren hasi zen esaten eta zer txarto pasatzen ziren han. Minutu batzuk eman zuen horrelako panorama izugarria deskribatzen eta berak ez zuen batere ideiarik zertaz zihoan mojaren halako beldurrezko azalpenik . Azkenean kendu zion zeukan zorrozkailua. Amari dena esanda arratsaldean berarekin bueltatu behar zuen gauzak argitzeko. Berak margo kaxa berri bat trukatu zuen zorrozkailu bategatik beste ikaskide batekin. Beste ikaskideren gurasoek bakarrik zorrozkailuen falta somatu zuten, baina ez margo kaxa berriren sobera. Epaia fina suertatu zen moja hori bost urteko mutilari infernura botatzen, arrazoi guztiak kontuan hartu gabe.

‘Zeruan ere holako justizia eskasa egoten bada, hobe infernuan!’-pentsatu zuen bat-batean. Baina oroigarri polita ere bazuen. Egun batean, sarbideren ondoren kokatuko mahaitik etxera joateko asmoz altxatu zelarik, moja batek deitu zion bere mahaira, beste guztiak etxerako bidea hartzen zuten bitartean. Esan zidan: ‘hiru lagun bazarete eta zazpi sagarrak badituzu, zenbat bakoitzerako?’ Berak erantzun zion: ‘bi’. ‘Eta zenbat geratuko dira soberan?’-galdetu zion berriro. ‘Bat’- erantzun zion. Pare bat antzeko galdera eta esan zion bukaeran: ’Tira, zoaz etxera. Badakizu orain zatiketak egiten’.

Moja aurreratuak eta zintzoak bazeuden ere haur eskola hartan, non pausu martzialean eta ilaran sartu behar baitziren, gerrako abesti frankista bat  kantatzen ari zeneko keinua egiten zuten bitartean. Gela horren kanpoko aldean zegoen baratz txiki bat, non txerri potolo bat hazten zuten. Izugarrizko tamaina zeukan!

Hala ere, zer ez luke emango bizitu zuen gertakari batzuren arrazoia jakiteko…

Berarentzat, beste korridorea Zarugalde kale aldetik zehar joaten zen. Etxetik entzuten zen trafikoaren zarata. Nola kamioiak, batez ere, azeleratzen zuten kale hasieran eta aurrera joan ahala ailegatzen zen zarata moteltzen zihoan , kaleko bukaeran zegoen arkua pasatzeko eta eskuinaldera Kanpazarreko norabidea har zedin.

Gauean sukaldeko sabaiko forma konkor eta arrakalatsuak argi hitsen menpean kamioi horien eta arkuaren figurak biziarazten zuten, beste figurekin batera, kamioi zarata entzuten zuen bitartean. Udako gauetan ere txitxarren zaratak zerbait ernarazten zuen bere barruan, ’hator, hator’ esaten baliote bezala. Arratsaldeko seirak aldera kaleko eguratsaren aldaketa somatzen zen  nolabait argiaren moteltzearekin. Bizitza abiadura indargetzen ariko balitz bezala. Txoriaren txorrotxioka zein arboletan gaua igaroko ziren bila, alde batetik.

Lanetik etortzen ziren kotxeak, bestetik, hantxe bere etxe aurrean gelditzerakoan. Ateak zabaltzen ziren ‘bihar arte’ batekin eta gero ixten ziren ‘plast’-hotsarekin. Gero berriro motorra martxan jartzen zen.

Bere hirugarren korridorea zen San Kristobalekoa. Eguerdiko hamabietan, Angelus garaian, ermitako kanpaitxoren  hotsak bere etxetik entzuten ziren. Mendixka hartan igota entzuten zen herriaren burrundara. Kotxeen motorrak eta klaxonak, jenderen garrasiak, txakur batzuen zaunkak, txistu batzuk, Parrokiako kanpai hotsak ordua ematen, horiek erakusten zuten herria izaki bizidun antzeko zerbait zela.

Bera erdi erdian zegoenean ez zen nabaritzen zein zaratatsua zen bere herria. Baina handik urruntzen zenean ,ordea, osotasun zalapartatsua bihurtzen zen. Ematen zuen musika orkestra trakets baten aurrean zegoela, non  bakoitzak hasi baino leheneko afinazio soinuak egiten baitzuen, beste musikariek zer nota jotzen zuten  batere jaramonik egin gabe.

Hala ere, zer ez luke emango bizitu zuen gertakari batzuren arrazoia jakiteko…

Argi zeukan zertzeladak bestelakoak zirela gertakari horiek gertatu zirenean. Ez zegoen orduan telefono mugikorrik . Horrek nahi zuen esan informazio iturri bakarrak zirela egunkari batzuk eta telebista kate gutxi. Ez zegoen sare sozialik ‘Ez zegoen gaur bezala etxe askotan idazle isil bat bere iritzia egia bihurtzen saiatzen. Isiltasuna bakarrik apurtzen duena letra larrien erabilera izaten da.

Bere senean ez daudenentzako  beste aukerarik ez da geratzen bere garrasiak eta aginduak letra larrien bidez adierazteaz kanpo. Horretarako ere kodea erabili behar!’- esan zuen berekiko haserre samar. ’Bigarren gerra mundialaren garaian hainbeste irrati igorle balego Ipar Amerikarrak bukatuko zinatekeen Islandian Normandiako bideaz galdezka.

Bitartean Frantziako Normandian inguruko irrati igorleak  ‘udazkeneko biolin negar luzeak ’(1) nolako eragina izango  ziokeela beren bihotzean edo udazkena instrumenturik egokiago zein izan  zitekeen ibiliko ziren eztabaidatzen ’-oharkabeko irri batekin pentsatu zuen

Hasteko ‘déjà vu’ bat ez zela bazekien. Horrelakoak, beharbada, garunaren atal zehatz bat jasotzen zuen bulkada elektriko batek eragin zitzakeen.  Irakurria zuen pertsona batek bulkada elektriko bat jasotzen bazuen ezker lobulu frontaleko puntu batean, aurrean ikusten zuen guztia barregarria iruditzen zitzaiola, edozer zela ere, kartzelara joateko agintzen zuen papera izan bazen ere.

Baina ez, kanpoko zerbaitek ere esku hartzen zuen hemen. Bere bizitzarekin zerikusirik izango balu, bere etorkizunaren liburuan lerro zatitu eta lauso batzuk irakurri zituelako ideia irits zitekeen.

Lehendabizikoa oporretan zegoenean gertatu zitzaion . Egun hartan bizikleta hartu eta Beasaindik Ataunerako bidetik abiatu zen. Bide estua eta bihurgunetsua abiaturik, hasi zen kotxeren matrikuletan erreparatzen. Lehendabizikoa serie arrunt batean zegoen,1357, edo antzeko zerbait. Beste batean lehendabiziko bi zenbakiak  eta azkeneko biak zenbaki bereak ziren edo buelta emanda. Horrelako matrikulak ohi baino kantitate nabarmen handiago ikusi zuen.

Ez zen gogoratzen zehatz-mehatz nola izan zen, baina antzeko egoera barruan egoteak eraman zuen berarekin zer esanik zeukan zerbait gertatzen ari zela pentsatzera. Holako pentsamendu bitxia zuen buruan, ‘zeruak zerbait esaten ari zatzaizkit ’ bezalako pentsamendua nolabait. Zerbait zeharo irrazionala zen baina holako aldartzean aurkitzen zitzaidan. Oporrak bukaturik Bilbora bueltatu zenean enteratu zen promozionatua izan zela.

Gogoratu zen bigarren kasua nolakoa zen, bestea baino bitxiagoa. Goiz batean Beasainen lanera zihoan. Abenduko egun hotsa zen. Ez zeraman denbora asko lan egiten eta presaz presa zihoan. Aparkatuta espaloiaren ondoan  ikusi zuen furgoneta txiki bat. Furgonetak zeukan ipinita atean letra larriz hurrengo izena: XAKA ORDIZIA. Berak furgoneta ikusi eta bat-batean bere burutik zeharkatu zioan hitz bat: Sa Carneiro. Handik metro batzuetara lantokian sartu zen. Gero gauean etxera bueltatu zenean enteratu zen telebistan  Sa Carneiro hil zela istripu batean pasa zen gauan.

Hirugarrena harrigarri samar zen berarentzat. Behin bere laguna Iñaki Berezibar ‘Txaparro’ berarekin iota eta jota non erabili behar hitz egiten egon zen. Bera behin bere aitarekin Aramaiora joan zela gogoratu zuen. Hantxe mezatan abadea sermoia ematerakoan iotaz betetako euskara erabili zuen. Berarentzat mundu ezberdin bat zen.

Gainera Arrasateko euskara jotaz beteriko euskara zela. ‘Juau’,’ jitzuau’,’jat’,’jok’ eta antzekoak asko erabilitakoak  ziren Arrasaten. Bai, ahoskera zakar samar zen baina ,hala ere, berea. Horregatik ez zuen ulertzen nola bere laguna Iñaki Berecibar Joseba iotaz ahoskatzearen alde zegoen. Bera zen betidanik Joseba, jotarekin esanda. Azkenean bere azalpenaz eta erretolikaz asperturik Iñaki Berecibarrek esan zuen. ‘Beno, aurrerantzean ‘Josebapulos’ deituko zaitut’. Handik  hamaika bat urte Malagan zegoen lanetan.

Bere lankideak, Emilio Alba, ingelesez zegoen Tarot baten erabiltzeko argibideak gaztelerara itzultzeko eskatu zion. Bere bikotekidea, Lola, mundu esoteriko horretan sartuta zegoen-eta. Behin itzulpena eginda, bere lankideak bere etxera eraman zion. Bere bikotekidea oso argala zen, benetan bitxia, itxura espiritualegia bere gusturako. Lolak esan zion  Burgoskoa zela eta bat-batean esan zion.’Josebapulos’. Nahiz eta zeharo harrituta egon, ez entzunarena egin zuen, batere jaramonik egin gabe. Ez zen egon berriro Lolarekin.

Laugarrena prentsan irakurritakoa zen. ‘Pais Semanal’-ek ‘Uliako sorgina’ri eginiko elkarrizketa bat gogoratu zuen. Maritxu Erlanz-ek, Erronkarikoa, jaso zuen kazetaria eta argazkilarien bisita. Elkarrizketa hasi eta gutxira argazkilariari esan zion: ‘Zuk bizkarrean orezta bat duzu’. Eta hala zen, nahiz eta  bizkarra ondo estalita zuen, han orezta bat zeukan.

Bidai mentala hori ez zen berarentzat oso eroso suertatu. Hala ere, galdera pare bat bere buruan zebilen erantzun baten xerka .‘Zergatik gogoratu naiz nire haur eskolako gertakarietaz?-esan zuen berekiko. ‘Agian, Kontxi ezagutu baino aurrerago eramate horrek heriotza nire burutik deuseztatuko zuelakoan nengoke’-erantzun zion bere buruari.

‘Zergatik nik ezagutu ditudan azalpen arrazionalik gabeko gertakari batzuk etorri zaizkit burura?- marmartu zuen etsipenez. Ez zitzaion korapilatsua ez zela erantzunik bururatu. Nor zen bera zientzia eta osotasunaren ezberdintasunari buruz zerbait esateko? Orduan gogoratu zuen giza adimenari buruz irakurri zuena:  ‘naturak bizirauteko asmoarekin eginiko tresna dela , ez kosmosaren barneko izaeran barneratzeko’(2).

‘Gauza batzuk jakin daiteke bide ezezagunagatik, nahiz eta bakarrik txatxuek pentsa dezake horrelako jakintza erabili modukoren bat antola dezake. Zerbait zatikatua, osatugabea, baina, hala ere, bide ez-ohikoak jaso daitekeenaren aurrean gaude’- pentsatu zuen azkenean.

No volvió a ver a Lola.

INFORMATION WITHOUT REASON

He saw an obituary of a childhood friend, Conchi, and that awakened within him memories of his childhood and some unexplained events. He walked on deep in thought.

’ For physicists, information is matter. But then, what kind of things are my childhood memories? What material will they be composed of?  Maybe of electrical impulses? But, only that one? If only neurologists knew! – he said to himself.

'In the end, particle or wave, I am just a fool who moves through that space divided by mathematicians into three spatial coordinates and one temporal coordinate, nothing else more' -- he added, muttering quite angrily.

Toribio Aguirre Street took shape in his brain, as if it were an elongated hallway.  At the beginning Patxi the shoemaker, where the 'bam, bam' sound of his hammer could be heard. Then Emili's grocery store, where her husband Jose Garmendia, from Zaldibia, approached, pulling a wheelbarrow full of breads and buns that he had baked in the communal oven.

Next, the Iskiña bar. There would be Sodupe bored during the quiet morning and full of people and overwhelmed with work in the afternoon. Then the noisy Txantxote fish market, full of shouting and jets of water. In front the shadows of Arbolapeta, a meeting place for people, without people in the morning. Then the Juldain tobacconist. There in their shop window, in addition to tobacco, were the magazines 'Vidas Ejemplares' from the Novaro publishing house, 'La Codorniz' and 'el Caso'.

A little further on, the fruit shop of Petra 'kolunas' and the Gomix kitchen gadget store, packed with gadgets in its horseshoe-shaped space. On the right was his cousin Pedro Zubia 'Perikin's barbershop. How many sarcastic people among his clients! On the other side of the street was the 'Caserío' bar. And at the end of the street, surrounded by walls, was the Montzon house, with its pear trees loaded with fruit.

Leaving the street was the church of San Francisco and its cloister, next to the market. That market on weekends was called ‘Berduli dancing’, and became a dancing place for young people. In that cloister the Mercedarian nuns had a nursery school. He used to go slowly, secretly hoping to find the school doors closed. Sometimes he achieved his goal. A nun was going to retire and he was chosen, in his first year of nursery school, to read her tribute speech.

Another nun took him to a girls' classroom to rehearse the speech and give him the text of the speech ordering him: 'read it'. Then she began to tell him:’ louder'’. Somewhat bored, she grabbed him by the waist, put him on top of a school desk and told him: 'Now, in a higher voice. Keep it reading'. All the girls in the classroom, three years older than him, burst out laughing. He no longer remembered any of the words of the speech, but he did remember the shame he experienced in that rehearsal.

Another day a nun sat next to him. He began to tell him that bad people went to hell and how bad they had it there. He spent several minutes describing that terrifying panorama and he still didn't understand what the nun's creepy explanation was about.  In the end he took from him the pencil sharpener away and left. He explained everything to her mother and in the afternoon he returned with her to the nursery school to clarify things. He had exchanged the pencil sharpener for a new paint box with another pupil. The other pupil's parents missed the pencil sharpener, but they didn't notice that he had a new paint box.

The nun turned out to be a diligent judge sending a five-year-old boy to hell, without taking into account all the reasons. 'If there is so little justice in heaven, it is better to go to hell' – he thought to himself. But he also had beautiful memories. One day, when he got up from the table next to the exit door to go home, a nun called him to his table, while everyone else was already going home. He told him: 'If you are three friends and you have seven apples, how many do you get for each one?'. He answered: ‘two’. 'And how many do you have left?' she asked him again. ‘One’- he answered. A couple more questions of that type and at the end he said: 'Well, go home. You already know how to divide’.

There were also advanced nuns and good people in that nursery school where they entered at a martial pace and in a row while making the gesture of singing some Francoist martial song. Outside that classroom there was a small garden where a fat pig was fattening. It had a formidable size!

Still, what he wouldn't have given to know the reason for some of the experiences he had experienced...!

For him, another corridor was the one that crossed Zarugalde Street. From home he could hear the noise of traffic. How the trucks, above all, accelerated at the beginning of the street, and as they advanced the sound faded until they passed under the arch of the street to turn right towards Kanpazar.

At night, under the weak light on that somewhat lumpy and slightly peeling roof of the kitchen, the shapes of those trucks and the arch came to life, accompanied by other shapes, as he heard the sound of traffic on the street.  On summer nights, the noise of the cicadas stirred something inside him, as if they were saying 'come, come'. In the afternoon around six there seemed to be a change in the atmosphere with the weakening of the light. As if the speed at which we live were slowing down.  On one side, the birds chirping in search of their tree to spend the night. On the other were the cars that came from work and stopped near his house. The door opened with a 'see you tomorrow' and then closed with a 'slam'. The engine was started again.

His third corridor was that of the mound of San Cristóbal. At twelve noon, at the time of the Angelus, the sound of the small bell of its hermitage could be heard from his house. From the top of that mound you could hear the noise of the town.  The car engines, and the horns, the screams of the people, the barking of some dogs, some whistles, the Parish bells ringing the hours, all this showed that the town was something like a living being.

When he was inside it he didn't realize how noisy his town was, but when he moved away from it a little, it became a bustling whole. He seemed to be in front of a clumsy orchestra, where each one tuned his instrument before the concert, without paying attention to the notes played by the others.

Still, what he wouldn't have given to know the reason for some of the experiences he had experienced...!

He was clear that the circumstances were different when he lived those experiences. There were no mobile phones. That meant that the only sources of information were a few newspapers and a few television stations. Social networks did not exist. ‘There were not many silent writers like today in many homes trying to make their opinion true. The only thing that breaks that silence is the use of capital letters. Those who are not in their right mind have no other recourse to express their shouts or orders than to use capital letters. Even for that you have to use a code!’- he said to himself rather angry.

’During the Second World War, if there had been so many radio stations, the Americans would still be in Iceland asking for directions to Normandy. Meanwhile in France, radio stations around Normandy would be discussing what effect 'the long sobs of the autumn violins' would have on their hearts’ (1) or what instrument would be most appropriate to express autumn' -he thought with an involuntary smile.

He knew that it wasn't a ‘déjà vu’.  These cases could be caused by an electrical impulse on a certain point in the brain. He had read that when a person receives an electrical impulse at a certain point in the left frontal lobe, everything in front of him seems funny, even if it was his own incarceration order. But no, something external was coming into play here. If it had anything to do with his life, he might come to the idea that he had read something blurry and fragmentary from the book of his future.

The first one happened while he was on vacation. That day he took the bicycle and from Beasain he went to Ataun.  Going down that narrow and curvy road he began to notice the license plates of the cars.  The first was a regular series, 1357, or something like that. In another, the first two numbers and the last two were the same, or in reverse position.

These types of license plates began to be seen by him in greater numbers than usual. He didn't remember exactly what it was like, but this situation led him to think that something that had to do with him was happening. He had a strange thought in his head, which somehow led him to think that 'the heavens were telling him something'. It was totally irrational, but he was immersed in that state of mind. Once the vacation was over, he returned to Bilbao and there he found out that he had been promoted at work.

He remembered how the second case was, even stranger than the previous one. One morning in Beasain he was going to work. It was a cold December morning. He hadn't been in the company for long so he was in a hurry. Next to the sidewalk was a small van.

The van had the following name written on the door in capital letters: XAKA ORDIZIA. At the same moment he saw it, a name crossed his mind: Sa Carneiro. From there, a few meters away, he entered in his working place. Later that night when he returned home he found out on television that Sa Carneiro had died in an accident the night before.

The third case was rather surprising. He was once talking to his friend Iñaki Berecibar 'Txaparro' about when to use the jota or the iota in Basque. He remembered that once he went with his father to Aramayona.  There the priest gave a sermon using a Basque language full of iotas. For him it turned out to be a different world.

Furthermore, Mondragon's Basque was a Basque language full of jotas. 'Juau', 'jitzuau', 'jat', 'jok' and similar ones were widely used. Yes, it was a somewhat harsh pronunciation, but it was, nevertheless, of their own. That's why he couldn't understand how his friend Iñaki Berecibar told him that he had to say his name Joseba using the iota. At the end, bored with his rhetoric and his explanations, Iñaki Berecibar told him: 'well, from now on I will call you 'Josebapulos.'.

About eleven years later he was working in Malaga. His colleague, Emilio Alba, asked him to translate some instructions of use of a Tarot that were in English into Spanish.  Since his partner, Lola, was in that world of the esoteric.  Once the translation was done Emilio took him to his house. His partner, Lola, was very thin, looking too spiritual for his taste. Lola told him that she was from Burgos and suddenly said to him: 'Josebapulos'. Despite being totally astonished, he didn't make any gesture, as if he hadn't heard. He never saw Lola again.

The fourth he read in the press. He remembered an interview to the 'witch of Ulia' in the 'Pais Semanal'. Maritxu Erlanz, from the Roncal-Erronkari, received a visit from the journalist and the photographer. Shortly after beginning the interview he told the photographer: ‘You have a mole on your back'. And so it was, despite having his back covered, he had a mole in it.

That mental trip did not turn out to be very pleasant for him. Even so, he had a couple of questions in mind in search of answers. ‘Why have I remembered events from my nursery school?’ -he asked himself. ‘Perhaps, by taking my memories to a time before I met Conchi, I would try to erase the idea of death from my mind.’-he answered himself.

‘Why have this kind of events come to my mind that have no rational explanation? - he murmured desperately. No simple explanation came to his mind. Who was he to say anything about the difference between totality and science? Then she remembered something she had read about human intellect: ‘which were tooled by nature for survival, not for penetrating the inner nature of the cosmos’ (2).

‘Some things can be known in unknown ways, although only a fool would think that this kind of knowledge could be organized in a way that could be used. We are faced with something fragmentary, incomplete, which, even so, we can receive through unusual means’- he finally concluded.

Orain eta hemen….bai zera!

Irakurri berri zuen liburu batean ‘hic et nunc’ esaldia eta horren haritik bere pentsamenduak hasi ziren zamalkatzen.’ Orain eta hemen, ba al dago gezur handiagorik?’-pentsatu zuen berekiko. Momentu horretan zegoen tokian 180 graduko buelta eman zuen eta 'hemen' hori beste zerbait bilakatu zen. Batbederak zeukan bere ’hemen’. Zein benetakoa?

‘Zenbat irauten du gure ‘orainak’ iraganean murgildu baino lehen? Begi-kliska bat? Hi tontolo, ez hasi orain sasifilosofo baten papera hartzen. Hegel eta Agustin Hiponakoa horretaz asko eta luze hitz egin zuten eta. Zuk bakarrik dizu gogoetaren errosario xume bat buruan’-murmurikatu zuen berekiko haserre samar.

Haurtzaro eta nerabezaroan zehar Ipar Amerikatik jasotako berri batzuk buruan ate joka zeuzkan. Sei urte zeuzkanean San Viator klerikoek ‘la Vergaresa’-ri alokatu ziotelako autobus batean Zumaia aldera joan zen antolatutako txango batean.

Barku bateren bozina sarkin ikaragarri zaratatsua portura sartzen zenean entzun zuela eta Zumarragako tren geltokiaren ondoan itxaronaldi luzea egin behar zuela ziren bere gogorapenak. Antza denez matxura bat zeukan autobusa eta konpondu arte hantxe denbora luzea geratzera behartuta izan ziren.

Baina deigarria  zen egun hartako beste hirugarren gogoeta. Autobusa pasatzerakoan bide erdiko  taberna batean arbela bat kanpoan zeukala ikusi zuen. Han idatzita zegoen hurrengoa: ‘Han asesinado a Kennedy’(‘Kennedy hil dute’).

Uztaileko 20.an joaten ari zen Zarugalde kaletik aurrera. Uda min erdi-erdiko eguzkiak  gogor jotzen zuen. Uribarrenen etxe aldera joaten ari zen. Muxibar tabernaren albotik pasa eta ezkerrera jo zuen Udalaren bideko aldapa  igotzeko.

Han bidea eskuinera bihurtzen  zen toki berberean zegoen etxea. Etxabean zuen sala bat eta aurre aldean zeukaten etxe osoko telebista. Hantxe bertan ziren etxeko denak  telebista ikusten. ‘Zelako geldotasunez mugitzen dira’ entzuten zen kanpotik Elias Uribarrenek esaten. Egun hartan Neil Amstrongek lehen pausoak eman zituen Ilargian.

Baina berarentzat bakarrik bere lagunek, Elias Uribarrenek eta besteek, kanpoan jolastu ez zuen nahi eguna zen. Larragain belardian ez zuten egun hartan futbolean jolastuko. Ez zuen ere baserritarrarengandik ihes egiteko aukerarik edukiko partida erdian belardian garrasika agertzerakoan, ohi egin zuen bezala.

Bueltatu zen etxera triste Zarugalde kale erdi-erditik. Bero harekin odola punpaka buruan sentitzen zuen. Baina zerbait faltan somatzen zuen…

Bere aldameneko osaba Juan Bautistak  jasotzen zuen aldizka ‘Selecciones del Reader’s Digest’ (‘Reader’s Digest-en aukeraketak’)liburuxkak. Eta horietatik liburuxka asko pasatzen zizkien bere aldameneko bizilagunei.

Han islatzen zen mundu berri bat,  Ipar Amerikako mundua. Liburuen eta filmen laburpenak, txisteak, sukaldeko errezetak, aholkuak eta iragarkiak agertzen ziren. Une honetan bazekien hori Ipar Amerikako erdi-mailako burgesiari zela zuzendua, motz eta modu trakatsean esanda ‘Westinghouse’-ko klasera. Klase horietakoak  horrela bazuten party batean zertaz hitz egiteko , beste partaideek tontotzat jo ez zitzaten.

Baina garai hartan beretzat mundu ezezagun batek zabaltzen zuen bere aurrean, luxuzko eta jakintasunez beteta. Nahiz eta filmen eta  liburuen laburpen horiek argi erakutsi behar zukeen jende mota horrek ez zuela liburuak irakurtzeko edo filma ikusteko denbora haina. Bakarrik azalezko kultura zen. Baina orduko harridurak ez zion kritikari batere lekurik uzten. Kritikaren ahalmena oso ahul zeukan oraindik.

Bere nerabetasunean Newsweek eta Time irakurtzen  hasi zen. Ronald Reagan hautatu zuten Ipar Amerikako presidente. Nahiz eta une honetan heroitzat modura jotzen zuten, Ipar Amerikarrak ez ziren iritzi berekoa garaia hartan. Ezaguna zen bere aurrean zeuden kazetariak ‘son of a bitches’ (‘putakumeak’) deitu ziela, mikrofonoa itxita zegoelako pentsatzen, hutsegitez.

Bere jakin eskastasuna adierazteko  bere kolaboratzaile batek kontatzen zuen Newsweek-en  pasadizo bat. ‘Presidente Jauna, hau da errusiarren arma sekreturen  aurkitu dugun azkena. The A359’-esan zion kolaboratzaileak Reagani. ‘Eta beste antzeko hau?’-esan zion Reaganek kolaboratzaileari beste argazki bat seinalatuz . ‘Hau da A354, A359-ren beste bertsio baina aurreratuagoa eta berriagoa ’- erantzun zion kolaboratzaileak.

’Aha!, Errusiarrek iruzur egiten digu, nahita zenbakiak gaizki jartzen!’ -esan zuen Reaganek, pozik etsaien maltzurkeria salatzeko aukera aprobetxatzen. Eta kolaboratzailek lasai, seriotasuna zailtasunez mantenduz, erantzun zion:’ Ez, Presidente Jauna, zenbakiak guk geuk  jartzen diogu arma sekretuari aurkitzen ditugun hurrenkeraren arabera’.

Kontsiderazio gutxi hori dela eta, Israeldarrak Washington-era bisitaldi batean Defentsa Idazkariengana joaten ziren zuzenean, Reagan Presidentearen gainetik pasata. Orduan Israeldarrek bazuten beren argudioa, beraientzat  eztabaidaezina: Ipar Amerikako muga Israelen zegoen, orduan muga horren defentsa Ipar Amerikako lana zen. Gaurdaino iraun duen argudio izugarria . Baina zerbait faltan somatzen zuen…

Paul Etcheverry zen beraientzat ekarritako ingeles irakaslea, Eusko Jaurlaritzak egindako Nazioarteko Merkatalgoari buruzko ikastaro hartan. Bera euskal jatorrizko ipar amerikarra zen. Amerika aldera bidaia horretan abizen bat baino gehiago aldatua izan zen. Haien artean berea. Bere jatorrizko abizena Etchebers(Etxebeste) zen, baina nola edo hala Etcheberry izaten bukatu zen.

Berak kontatu zion txiste ipar amerikar bat. ‘Zer da tanke bat, gasolinarik gabe geratzen denean eta kanoiak funtzionatzeari uzten dio? Ba, 70 tonako irrati eramangarri bat’. Paul Laxalten istorio bat ere partekatu zuen. Paul Laxalt abokatua zen, Reaganen lagun hurkoa eta bere aita artzain euskalduna zen. Ipar Amerikako abokatuak , Trumpen abokatu batzuk azaldu arte behintzat, jende serio eta hitz-jariodunak izaten ziren.

Behin egon ziren abokatu famatu batzuk afari batean eta han zegoen Paul Laxalt erdian azalpenak ematen artzainen bizitzari buruz. Han adierazten zien nola txistu mota desberdinak erabiliak izaten ziren txakurrari aginduak emateko, artaldea zuzen eraman zezan. Whisky botilatxo asko edan eta gero han zebiltzan abokatu guztiak lurrean eserita esku batekin mahaia heltzen eta txistu-hots kontzertu polifonikoa ematen beren artaldeko txakur imajinarioei aginduak emateko.

Paul Etcheverry bazen ere bihotz samurrekoa. Kennedyri buruz hasten bazitzaion hitz egiten ezkutuko negar malko batzuk dirdiratzen zituen bere begietan segituan, 1984 urte hartan.

Baina batzuetan bi toki horiek desberdinak , berea eta Ipar Amerikakoa, baten batzuk nahasten zituzten. Han zegoen bera Bilboko Terradas unibertsitate egoitzan egunkariak gainbegiratzen. Ez zegoen gauza handirik ikusteko, ABC egunkaria eta antzeko besteren bat.

Eta artikuluen argazkia zen hurrengoa: bi mutil sendo auto baten ondoan, agian Citröen bi zaldiko bat,  pankarta handi batekin zeharo zabalduta eta tente. Pankartak horrela zioen: ‘Orio y la Real a Montreal’(‘Orio eta erreala Montrealera’).Ez zebiltzan oso fin ABC-koak. Ez zen ausartuko beste artikuluetan finagoak ibili zirelarik esatera. Bi oriotarrak Ipar Amerikartzat hartu zituzten. Montrealgo Olinpiadak aurreko urtean,1976 urtean, izan ziren.

Faltan somatzen zuena ‘Bonanza’ ikustea ere ez zen. Ferrerias kaleko etxe batean, bere etxekoaren aurrekoan,  gizon bat egoten zen balkoian bere hanka bateko psoriasia larria agerian nolabait eguzkitan sendatu nahian. Lehen pisuko balkoian ohi zegoen eta denda bateko jabea zen. Sozialista izan zen eta politikagatik kartzelan egonda ere.

Kartzela bertan gaiztotu zitzaion hanka. Bere bazar antzeko dendan neskek eta mutilek puxtarriak erosten zituzten jolasteko, Arrasateko botxuez betetako herri hartan. ‘Txaparro’ goitizena zeukan jabeak eta bere denda horrela ezaguna zen, ‘Txaparronea’. Garai hartan kainozuloak ziren etsai nagusiak, puxtarriak ahoratzeko beti prest zeudelako.

Mastekatutako txikle zati bat itsatsi makil baten muturrean armatuz kainozulotik puxtarria ateratzeko neska eta mutilen taldeak maniobrak egiten ordu asko eman zuten.  1963 urte inguruan dendaren atzealdean zeukan sala handi bat ,aulki pila bat eta aurrean  telebista bat. Hara joaten ziren auzoko neska eta mutil guztiak ‘Bonanza’ ikustera. Ziur aski  auzoko telebista bakarra izango zen.

Aulki bat hartzen zuen eta esertzen zen programa hasieratik ikusteko.

Barrurago begiratu behar zuen faltan somatzen zuena aurkitzeko. Orduan konturatu zen zenbat aldiz zamalkatu zen mentalki urdinez jantzita Western batean. Urte eta urte eman zuen San Viatorreko klerikoen zine hartan, non zarata eta hurbileko pantaila xurgatu baitzidan bere arreta osoa, Western-go epopeia behin eta berriro ikusten.

Indioak eta bakeroak , gaiztoak eta onak. Semeez  zamaturiko Jainkoaren beldur zeukaten laborarien karabanak , eta beste aldean lumadunak, indioak, adats motzaileak, beti prest karabanei erasotzeko eta whiskiarekin mozkortzeko. Eta haien artean zeuden zaindariak, uniforme urdineko soldaduak, Zalditeriako Zazpigarrena, bere tronpeta hotsez, azken uneetan bizirik eta salbu onak ahal den gehienak ateratzeko.

Zelako burrunba hura, ikusleen hankekin sortutakoa, soldaduen zamalkatze larri hartan laguntzeko entzuten zen zinean. Beste alditan, azken zoko ezkutu batean bizi zen familia xume bat lurra lantzen. Eta egun madarikatu batean indio  andana zaldiz hil zituzten familia horren gehienak eta etxeari sua eman zioten suzko geziez. Eta bera hantxe zinean eserita gorrotoa sentitzen zuen indioen kontra eta familia horren parte izango balitz bezala pena handia sentitzen zuen.

Han zebilen urdinezko soldaduei mentalki laguntzen eta bera ere urdinez jantzita zamalkatzen indio gaixto guztiekin akabatzeko. Gero jakingo zuen hori bere jabeei lurra musu truk kentzearen prozesua zela. Indioak ziren legezko jabeak eta beste aldekoak inbaditzaileak. Eta pelikuletan agertzen ziren gotorlekuak espoliazio prozesu hori ziurtatzeko ziren, ez kultura, ezta ere bizitza sozialaren defentsan. Nahiz eta bera bereganatzen zuelako epopeia hori leku oso urrunean gertatua izan, bera orduan zeharo murgilduta sentitu zen Estatu Batuetan.

Arrotza eta urrutikoa izanik, auzokoa bezala sentitu zen bere argizarizko adimen moldagarrian, kritikaren lanabesak oraindik eraturik gabe. Txikle mastekatzen, erregalizak eta karameluak jaten zituen bitartean modu goxoan bere Mendebaldeko Zibilizazio boteretsuen alderako lerrokatze prozesua hasi zen.

Tormantosko lagun batek esan zion:’ begira, Erromatarrak Logroñoraino iritsi ziren’. Baina, nola esan lagunei Inperioaren agintaldia ez dela horrela izaten? Ez zen Erromako biztanleak Logroñoraino bizitzera joaten zirelako, baizik eta Logroñoko buruzagitzek Erromako lege eta bizimodura hartuz eta onartuz eratzen zuten prozesua.

Horretarako behartuta sentitu beharko ziren une konkretu batean, baina hori beste gauza zen. Bere buruari hazka egin zion, eta pentsatu zuen: ’Tabakoren ekoizle handiak ez zuten Reaganen kanpaina finantziatu nahi, eta hortik dator gure munduko tabakoaren satanizazioa. Ildo horretatik, zer ondorioa ekarriko liguke Trumpi eta bere buru gabeko jarraitzaileei uzten baliete demokraziarekin bukatzea?’

Kalera irten baino lehen beste azken-aurreko pentsamendua izan zuen:’ Berrehun  urte barru historiagileek esango dute Arrasate Ipar Amerikaren Inperio barruan zegoela, baina, argi gera dadila ipar amerikarrak ez garela!’

Here and now…by no means!

He had just read in a book the phrase ‘hic et nunc’ and because of these words his thoughts ran frantically.’ Here and now, is there any other greater lie?’-he thought to himself. If at that moment he made a 180 degree turn while staying in the same place, that 'here' would become something else.

Each one has his own ‘here’. Which one is real? 'How long does the 'now' last before it plunges into the past? The blink of an eye? You, fool, do not take the role of a false philosopher. Because Hegel and Augustine of Hippo wrote at length about them. You only had a humble rosary of memories in your head’- he muttered to himself somewhat angry.

In his head, the memories concerning the US from his childhood and adolescence knocked on his door. He was six years old when he went on a scheduled excursion with the clerics of San Viator to Zumaia on a bus rented from 'La Vergaresa'.

The terribly loud and drilling horn of a ship entering the port and the long period of forced waiting next to the Zumarraga train station were his memories. Apparently, the bus broke down and it was necessary to wait there for a long time until it was fixed.

But the most striking thing was a third memory from that day. As the bus passed a halfway tavern he saw there a blackboard that had been put outside. There they had written the following: 'Kennedy has been assassinated.'

On July 20th he was going forward along Zarugalde Street. The mid-summer sun was harshly punishing.  He was going towards the Uribarren house. He passed next to the Muxibar tavern and turned left starting to climb the slope of the Udala road.

There, where the road turns to the right, was the house. On the ground floor there was a room where the television for the entire house was.  Everyone in the house was there watching the television. 'How slowly they move' Elías Uribarren was heard saying from outside. That day Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the moon.

But for him it was only the day when his friends, Elías Uribarren and the others, did not want to play outdoors. They would not play football that day in the Larragain meadow. Nor would they have a chance to flee from the farmer who owned the field when he appeared in the middle of the game shouting, as he usually did.

He returned home sad along the middle of Zarugalde Street. He felt the blood pumping in his head as a result of the heat. But he felt like something was missing...

His uncle Juan Bautista, who lived next door, periodically received the magazine 'Selecciones del Reader's Digest'(Reader´s Digest). And many of them he passed on to his next-door neighbors.

A new world was reflected there, the world of the USA. Summary of books and movies, jokes, cooking recipes, advice and advertisements appeared in them. At this point he already knew that it was aimed at the bourgeois middle class of the US, in a clumsy and descriptive way, at the 'Westinghouse' class. That class thus had something to talk about at the party, so that they would not be taken for an ignorant person.

But in those days a new world was opening before his eyes, full of luxury and wisdom. Although those book and movie summaries should have shown him that these people didn't spend their time reading books or watching movies. It was just a superficial culture. But the incantation of those days left no room for criticism. His critical ability was still very weak.

In his adolescence he began reading 'Newsweek' and 'Time'. Ronald Reagan was elected president of the USA. Although at this time he is considered a hero, in those days the Americans were not of the same opinion. It was public knowledge that he called journalists 'son of a bitches', mistakenly believing that his microphone was already closed.

In order to show his shortage of mental abilities, one of his advisers narrated an anecdote in 'Newsweek'. ‘Mr. President, this is the latest Russian secret weapon that we have discovered. The A359’- the adviser said to Reagan. 'And this similar one?' -Reagan said to the adviser, pointing to another photo. ‘This is the A354, a version of the A359 that is more advanced and newer than it' - the adviser answered him.

’Aha! The Russians deceive us, putting the numbers wrong on purpose’ -told Reagan, happy taking advantage of the occasion to point out the perversity of the Russians. And the adviser keeping serious with difficulty, answered him:’ no, Mr. President, we put the numbers according to the order in which we discover them’.

As an example of this lack of consideration, the Israelis went directly to visit the Secretary of Defense on a visit to Washington, bypassing Reagan. Even then Israelis already had an incontestable argument: the US border was in Israel and therefore it was the US's task to defend it.  A terrible argument that still lasts. But he felt like something was missing...

Paul Etcheverry was the English teacher brought for them, in that Foreign Trade course organized by the Basque Government. He was a Basque American. On that trip to America many family names were changed. So happened to his family name.  His original family name was Etchebers (Etxebeste), but one way or another it ended up being Etcheberry.

He told him an American joke.  ‘What is a tank when it runs out of gas and the barrel breaks down? Well, a 70-ton portable radio’. He also told him an anecdote about Paul Laxalt. Paul Laxalt was a lawyer, a great friend of Reagan, and his father was a Basque shepherd. US lawyers, at least until some Trump lawyers appeared, tended to be serious people with the gift of the gab.

Once there was a dinner for famous lawyers and there was Paul Laxalt in the middle giving them explanations about the life of the Basque shepherd. He explained to them how they used different whistles to give orders to the dog, in order to direct the flock of sheep. A good pile of bottles of whiskey later, there were the lawyers sitting on the floor, holding the table with one hand and giving a polyphonic concert of whistles to give orders to their imaginary dog so that he would lead the flock.

Paul Etcheverry also had his little heart. When he began to talk about Kennedy, a furtive tear appeared in his eyes, in that year 1984.

But sometimes such differing places, ours and those of the Americans, can be confused by some people. There he was in the Terradas university residence in Bilbao taking a look at the newspapers. There wasn't much to see, the 'ABC' and some other of similar tendency.

Next to the 'ABC' chess problem page there was a headline that said: 'The Obesity Problem in the USA.' And the photo of the article was the following one. Two men of tall stature and strong build next to a car, probably a two-horse Citroën, were holding a fully extended banner. That banner read: 'Orio and La Real to Montreal'. Those from 'ABC' did not do very well. He wouldn't dare say that they were better in other articles. They took two persons from Orio for Americans. Ignoring also that 'la Real' stands for Real Sociedad de San Sebastian football club. The Montreal Olympics had been held the previous year, in 1976.

It wasn't seeing 'Bonanza' that he was missing either. In a house on Ferrerías Street, in front of his house, a man used to be on the balcony with one leg in the air trying to somehow cure his acute psoriasis in the sun. He used to be on the first floor balcony and he was the owner of a store.

He was a socialist and had been in jail for political issues. It is in prison where the pain in his leg worsened. In their bazaar-type store, girls and boys bought marbles to play, in that Mondragón full of holes. The owner had the nickname 'Txaparro' and his store was known as 'Txaparro's store'.

In those days, sewers were the main enemies, always ready to swallow the marbles. Armed with a stick with a piece of chewed gum on the end, groups of girls and boys spent much of their time maneuvering to get marbles out of the sewers.

By 1963 the store had a large room with lots of chairs and a television in the front side. The girls and boys of the neighborhood went there to see 'Bonanza'. It would probably be the only television in the neighborhood. He pulled out a chair and sat down to watch the program begin. The entire map of 'La Ponderosa' started burning, starting from the center and extending to the sides. Pan, para pan, para pan, parapanpa!

He had to look deeper inside himself to discover what he was missing. Then he realized how many times he had mentally ridden dressed in blue in some Western.

He spent year after year in that cinema run by the clerics of San Viator, where the proximity to the screen and the deafening noise took over all his attention, watching over and over again the epic narrated by the Westerns. Indians and cowboys, bad and good. Caravans of God-fearing peasants loaded with children, and on the other side those adorned with feathers, Indians, scalps cutters, always ready to attack the caravans and get drunk with whiskey.

And between the two the guardians, the blue-uniformed soldiers, the Seventh Cavalry, with the sound of their trumpet, to save at the last moment as many good people as possible. What a roar, produced by the feet of the spectators, in support of that anguishing ride was heard in the cinema!

Other times, in a hidden corner lived a humble family working the land. And one cursed day a group of Indians on horseback killed most of the family and set fire to the house with flaming arrows. Sitting there in the cinema he felt hatred against the Indians and as if he were part of the assaulted family felt great sadness. There he was mentally dressed in blue riding to kill all the bad Indians.

Later he would know that it was a process of taking other people's lands without paying any price. The Indians were its legitimate owners and those on the other side were invaders. And the forts that appeared in the films were to guarantee this process of plundering, not to defend culture or social life. Although this epic that he made his own took place in a distant place, at that moment he felt totally immersed in the United States.

Even though it was strange and distant, he felt it as if it were happening in his own neighborhood in that brain of his, moldable like wax, without the tools of criticism yet formed. While he ate gum, licorice and candy, he sweetly began his process of aligning himself alongside the most powerful in Western Civilization.

A friend of Tormantos told him: 'Look, the Romans came until Logroño'. But how do you tell your friend that the dominion of the Empire does not happen that way? It is not that the inhabitants of Rome went to live in Logroño to settle there, but it was a process where the ruling class of Logroño accepted and adopted the Roman law and way of life.

In that process they must have felt obligated to do so at a certain moment, but that was another question. He scratched his head as he thought: 'The large tobacco producers did not support Reagan's campaign, and the consequence was the demonization of tobacco in the Western World. Following that reasoning, what consequences would there be if Trump and his bloody mindless followers are allowed to destroy democracy?’

Before going out onto the street, a penultimate thought struck him: 'In two hundred years, historians will be able to say that Mondragón was within the North American Empire, but let's be clear, we are not North Americans!' On the street he took a deep breath and a small smile appeared on his face : 'who knows what conclusions anthropologists could draw if in four hundred years they find any remains of my uncle's 'Reader Digest'.
